Understanding The Basics

What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a cosmetic dentistry procedure that can be used to resolve a wide variety of problems with your smile. It can be used to treat minor chips in teeth, uneven or misshapen teeth, gaps between your smile, yellowing and stains, and more.

Dental bonding uses a special “dental composite,” which is a tooth-colored material made from a blend of dental resin and crushed glass. This composite material is applied directly to your tooth by Dr. Hang Pham to reshape the tooth, cover up imperfections, and improve your smile.

Bonding requires no removal of your natural enamel, offers fast results in just a single appointment, and is quite durable and long lasting, so it’s a great option for anyone interested in cosmetic dentistry in Fullerton.

Is Dental Bonding Considered

A Cosmetic Procedure?

Yes. Dental bonding is considered to be a cosmetic procedure, so it is typically not covered by dental insurance plans, and you’ll likely have to pay for your procedure out of pocket. However, dental bonding is quite a bit less expensive than other cosmetic treatments like veneers, so the cost is typically manageable, even if you’re on a tight budget.

Because dental bonding is considered to be a cosmetic procedure, it’s also not a good option for patients who have serious oral health issues like major cracks or chips in their teeth, or who have cavities. If you have major problems with your teeth, you will need to resolve them with restorative dentistry before you can undergo cosmetic treatments like dental bonding.

What Can I Expect?

The Dental Bonding Procedure

The dental bonding procedure is simple, non-invasive, and may take as little as 30 minutes per tooth, so many patients choose to have multiple teeth treated in one session.
To begin the treatment, Dr. Hang Pham will clean your mouth. You can choose to have the treatment area numbed, but this is not typically necessary for dental bonding, since it’s non-invasive and requires no enamel removal or drilling.

Next, Dr. Hang Pham will paint your tooth with a very mild acid solution, which will “etch” and roughen the tooth to ensure the bonding material will adhere to the surface of the tooth properly. Then, she will select a tooth-colored resin that matches your tooth, and apply the material directly to the tooth.

Using special tools, Dr. Hang Pham will shape, harden, and trim the bonding material until your tooth looks perfect. Once the overall shape of the tooth looks good, Dr. Hang Pham will check your bite and make any final adjustments that may be required. If you’re having multiple teeth treated, this process will be repeated.
