Understanding the Underlying Issue

What Is Dental Anxiety?

Dental anxiety is a term used to describe the fear of going to the dentist. If you struggle with dental anxiety, there is no reason to feel ashamed! It is actually quite common. It is reported that between 9% and 15% of Americans are fearful of going to the dentist or have dental anxiety. Dental anxiety can be caused by a previous traumatic experience at a dental office or in some cases, it may simply develop over time. Many people can become anxious at the sight or thought of needles, drills, or simply the dental setting in general.

Besides making dental visits stressful and nerve-wracking, dental anxiety can negatively affect your overall health as well. Even If your mouth is currently in good health, if you put off your dental visits and cleanings due to dental anxiety, you may develop cavities or gingivitis. If these issues are left untreated, they will progress and require more invasive treatments, only worsening the stress associated with going to the dentist. For this reason, we encourage all our patients, anxious or not, to come in for regular cleanings and exams. Our goal is to help you avoid restorative dental procedures altogether. If you should develop a dental issue, we will walk you through every step of the treatment process to help you feel informed and at-ease.

Know Your Options

Do I Need Sedation?

Many dentists recommend sedation to help patients deal with dental anxiety. At All Day Smile, we see this as a band-aid that covers the issue but does not heal it. You don't need sedation to feel comfortable at the dentist, you need the right dental team. When you come to our office, we will listen to you to understand the root cause of your fear. We will also educate you on your recommended treatments and will be in constant communication with you throughout the procedure to ease your mind. Dr. Hang Pham can also teach you some breathing exercises that you can do to feel comfortable in the dental chair. With Dr. Pham’s gentle hands, you’ll be surprised how comfortable treatment is. Our compassionate staff is here for you and strives to cultivate a relaxed, judgment-free atmosphere.
